Francisco Umbral was a journalist and writer described as “the greatest Spanish author
of the 20th century”. His novel, A Mortal Spring (1975) is considered to be a masterpiece
of the late 20th century. His work earned him a range of awards including: the Mariano de Cavia Award, the González Ruano Award for Journalism, the Critic’s Choice Award, the Nadal Prize for The Nymphs, the Prince of Asturias Award, the Víctor de la Serna Award, the Fernando Lara Novel Prize for The Forging of a Thief, The National Letters Award, and the highest accolade in Spanish literature, the Cervantes Award. His other well-known works include: A Carnivorous Knife, Fern Trees, The Sentimental Socialist, Madrid: Urban Tribe, The Madrid Trilogy, The Legend of the Visionary Emperor, A Political and Sentimental Diary, Tales of Love and Viagra, The Son of Greta Garbo, Happy Days in Argüelles and Beloved 20th Century.
